Three Year Anniversary

Chrissy and I celebrated our three year anniversary on Wednesday. Aunt Cassie watched Aiden while we drove to the Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant in downtown Chicago. We have been to Cafe Fondue in Merrillville several times, but we have never tried any of the fondue shops in Chicago before. We expected something really nice, and that is what we got. Really nice. We gave ourselves two hours to get there since we knew that we would be driving through the Loop during rush hour. The drive into Chicago wasn’t bad, but it got nasty once we got close to the city. I was glad that we left early. Once we got there, we couldn’t find the valet attendant, so we had to circle back around to the parking garage. This sounds easier that it was since the restaurant is surrounded by one-way streets which were filled with people leaving work.

Things started to look up once we actually got inside. The atmosphere is dark and affords some privacy while Sinatra plays in the background. Our booth for two held a permanent granite cooktop with a single heating element set into it for cooking. We started off with martinis and a cheese fondue appetizer. They melt the cheese sauce right at the table, so you can pick the spices and ingredients to add to the mixture.

A mandarin and almond salad came before the main course. We ordered a bottle of wine to go with dinner, the Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Riesling. We’ve tried the “Saint Mike” Riesling before, but this is a better wine, blended in collaboration with Ernst Loosen. White wines go well with fondue, and Chrissy and I have a fondness for Rieslings (we keep a bunch of them in the kitchen at all times).

They blended a Coq Au Vin broth at our table with burgundy wine, garlic and spices. Then the main course arrived, which was a huge plate of lobster tail, shrimp, tuna, filet mignon, teriyaki steak, chicken and pot stickers. Another plate held vegetables; I ate all the potatoes and Chrissy got all the broccoli. They also brought about a dozen dipping sauces. Each piece must be skewered and cooked in the broth for two minutes, so you’re forced to eat slowly and enjoy each morsel. Everything was delicious.

Just before dessert, a complimentary bottle of champagne was delivered in honor of our anniversary. Dessert was a plate of strawberries, pineapple, marshmallows (including a few rolled in Oreo cookie crumbs), pound cake bits and a slice of cheesecake. These were to be dipped in a chocolate concoction made from milk chocolate, marshmallow creme and graham cracker bits, mixed to taste like S’mores. This was such a great experience that I think we’re going to make this an annual tradition from now on.
