Waiting for Battlestar
I was getting all excited that “Battlestar Galactica” was coming back on November 24th, but started seeing some confusing commercials during the new episodes of “Stargate: Atlantis”. The commercials said, “Battlestar Galactica: Razor, series starts November 24th.” But isn’t the regular “Battlestar Galactica“ series starting again on November 24th? What’s Razor?
To add to the confusion, SciFi is also promoting two-minute internet “Razor” clips about Admiral Adama’s younger days during the first Cylon War. So is “Razor” going to be a new series about the first Cylon War? Two Battlestar series going at the same time about two different wars, separated by forty years? That would be almost impossible from a production standpoint. It wasn’t making any sense at all, but I was very interested to see whatever they had to offer.
I had heard that the show would come to an end after season four, with a two-hour movie between seasons three and four, but I hadn’t heard anything about a “Razor” spin-off series. Don’t get me wrong, a spin-off series (like Atlantis from “Stargate SG1″) can be an excellent way to prolong a good show. “Stargate SG1″ was getting a little long in the tooth, after all. Hey, if only “Farscape” had had a good spin-off!
To ease my frustration, I did a little research. It turns out that Razor is actually the full-length movie that preceeds the new season of “Battlestar Galactica”. It’ll be about Lee Adama commanding the Pegasus. I guess SciFi is making good money on DVDs, so why not put the first two episodes of season four together and make a few bucks on DVD sales? The regular season episodes should start the week after Razor.
Until then, the flashback shorts on the internet will go from October 5th through November 16th. They should have named those something else, since the main confusion comes from the fact that the flashbacks are named the same as the two-hour movie, which they called a series premiere. “Flashbacks” would have been a fine name, and welcome new content. We’ve been waiting too long for new Battlestar to tease us with ambiguous advertising campaigns.
