Aiden Was Re-Evaluated By Speech Therapists
A year ago, our son Aiden was barely speaking at all. His vocabulary consisted of about a dozen words and we were teaching him sign language to compensate for his lack of speech. He was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech and we worried that he would never speak properly. When he turned three, we negotiated with NISEC (Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative) to enter him into pre-school for additional speech therapy.
A few months ago, Aiden was given a comprehensive evaluation by NISEC and the speech therapist at his pre-school. The report that we received afterward said that he had advanced to a level appropriate for his age and that they recommended dismissing him from pre-school and speech services. Chrissy and I thought that he still needed speech therapy, since he still has some trouble with some sounds (s-blends and “r”) even though he is speaking much better than he was even a year ago.
We took Aiden back to his private therapist at St. Margaret’s for a second opinion. His therapist hadn’t seen him in six months (about the time the insurance for the year ran out), but she was very impressed with his progress. She agreed that Aiden was at an appropriate age level for speech. In fact, she said that he wouldn’t need to return again until he turned five, and only then if we deemed it necessary.
So, Aiden is talking a lot now. And he’s smart, too. Taking a closer look at the testing that he received from NISEC, he scored at the 73rd percentile on the cognitive tests, which showed that his speech problem wasn’t a detriment to learning. The test results also gave him an IQ of around 115, but he’s only three years old so we don’t know how much stock to put in that. We’re just glad that he’s doing better.

Yay, Aiden!!!!
Fantastic news! Congrats, and enjoy talking to your boy
Thanks! We’re very proud of his progress! Next week will be his last week of public pre-school. And no more speech therapy at all! He’ll still continue at the private pre-school, though, two days a week, since we’re very happy with TLC.
