Predators Was Full Of Old School Sci-Fi Action Movie Goodness

Swavek and I went to see Predators on its opening night.  We got there early and watched the theater fill up.  I’m always surprised to see people come in even after the lights go down and still expect to find a decent seat.  I don’t normally see movies in the theater anymore, unless they are at the IMAX, but the hype surrounding this sequel was huge and I am a big fan of the franchise.  20th Century Fox has done nothing but screw up the property for the last decade with two lackluster Alien Versus Predator movies.  But I heard good things about the new movie, so I was excited to see it.

Like the Transformers movies, I came in with an open mind, expecting to be underwhelmed, but Predators really scored.  Robert Rodriguez basically took all of the parts of the original movie that made it great and wrote a new version with all the same stuff and some extra Predators.  So you get a bunch of trained killers waltzing through the jungle while being hunted by technologically superior gamesmen, infrared Predator vision, a smattering of inappropriate jokes, lots of blood and lasers, and lots of trophies. And an awesome Samurai showdown that must be seen.

The Predators were very well done, and I was happy to see that they went with men in suits as opposed to all CGI.  One reason why the AvP movies failed is because they went with full CGI and got stuck in the uncanny valley.  The addition of spikey hunting “dogs” was nice as well, and these used just enough CGI to make them believable.  I liked the differentiation between the Classic Predator and the Neo Predators.  I wondered if the Classic Predator got caught because it was a three-on-one fight, but he still got trounced by a single “Berserker” Predator in the end.  I was really thinking that he would win out and take the humans home.

But there is no Schwarzenegger.  I’m okay with this.  I’ve read online that there are a lot of people who wanted to see Arnold in the movie, and were very disappointed when he didn’t reprise his role from the first film.  Honestly, Dutch doesn’t fit here.  He possibly could have shown up as the Laurence Fishburne character, a survivor of an earlier band of hunted prey, but he would’ve ultimately been killed.  I don’t think that anyone would have been happy to see Arnold killed by the Predator.  If he had been one of the original party, he would have easily overshadowed Adrien Brody, who I thought did a great job as the de facto leader of the group.
