Installing Raised Plant Beds Is Easier Than Installing A Retaining Wall
I put in a short retaining wall in the front and sides of our house when we first moved in. Just as decoration, not to actually hold anything back. I had to level the ground, put guide lines down and stack each row of bricks. It took several days, it sucked, and I got a painful sunburn on my back.
In contrast, installing the raised plant beds in the backyard was a piece of cake. Tape measure: check! I measured two feet from the deck as a starter, then made sure that the boxes were two feet from each other. Shovel: check! I dug holes at each corner for the posts to sit in. Level: check! Then I had to dig around the box closer to the house to get it to sit level.
Chrissy came out to help me put down black paper along the work area. This will keep grass from growing around the plant beds so that we won’t have to weedwack around them (or the deck) all summer. I then cut holes in the paper above the post holes and put the boxes down in them. We might put mulch down here.
Everything came together nicely. I just needed to take another trip to Lowe’s to buy dirt. I stacked ten 40-pound bags of topsoil onto a cart, along with another six bags of 2-cubic-feet Miracle Grow vegetable soil. I could barely push the cart back to checkout. At least I got some help to load them into the car.
So granted, I got a workout that day, but I managed to get all of the dirt back home and unloaded into the plant beds. We’re not ready to plant the seedlings yet though, since there is still a little frost on the ground in the mornings. Soon though! Once we get the seedlings planted, I’ll post regular updates on their progress.
