Chrissy And I Go Out On Our Own For A Night

Chrissy and I are very involved parents, so we don’t normally get to go out by ourselves very often.  Every night, it’s dinner, bath, books and then bed for the kids.  Not to complain, but it’s nice to get a “Date Night” every once in a while.  Cassie agreed to babysit for us while we did the dinner-and-a-movie thing one night over Spring Break.

We started off at Three Floyd’s Brewery for dinner.  We have been saying that we were going to go there for the last three years, but never got a chance to.  They brew their own beer and have a nice selection of micro-brews.  We tried a beer sampler and we each had a different favorite from the four choices.   It’s not much to look at inside, but the food was great.

What we didn’t know is that their “pub food” is gourmet Scottish fair.  They have their own chef!  The by-product of beer brewing is called “mash”.  Three Floyd’s has an agreement with a local farm where they feed the mash to their animals and then send the animals back to be cooked up in their pub.  So our burger and chicken breast were organically grown locally on beer mash.  And they were delicious.

After that, we swung by Target to buy some movie candy (at about a quarter of what it would cost at the theater) and then headed to the theater.  We saw “Red Riding Hood“.  Chrissy liked it.  I thought it was a little slow, but the last two movies that I saw were action-fests and this was more of a chick flick.  There’s the whole teenage girl angst of being torn between the bad boy and the arranged marriage.  Bleh.

Red Riding Hood plays out like a medieval whodunnit.  Someone in the village is the werewolf, but who is it?  Several people seem like they’re the one, but many options are highlighted.  I thought it was the bad boy all along, but maybe the grandmother? “What big eyes you have!”  The setting was awesome, like a real life medieval village in the forest.  It’s worth renting at least.

It’s nice to get out with Chrissy and spend some time talking about grown-up things.  Not like bills or our jobs, but just stuff that doesn’t involve kid issues.  Get out, have a few beers and talk about what’s been going on lately.  Once you have kids, it’s important to take time to re-connect with your spouse so that you don’t grow apart.  Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case between us.
