Honey Crisp Apples On Labor Day

Chrissy really likes honey crisp apples.  They’re more expensive at the store than other types, since they’re only available seasonally, but we can get a good deal on them at the County Line Apple Orchard.  We usually go to the orchard every year during their Pumpkin Festival.  Last year was the first time that we tried to get the honey crisp there, but they were picked over already and it was hard to find any on the trees.  We would have to show up a little earlier to get them.

This year, we went to the orchard on Labor Day since we weren’t doing anything that morning.  As it turns out, the honey crisp apples are ready on Labor Day.  That would explain why they were all picked over by the time we got to them in mid-October last year.  On Labor Day, however, the bottom branches of the honey crisp trees were so heavily laden that they hung all the way to the ground.  Apples had already started to fall off on their own, but their five-second rule had expired.

We have been to the County Line Orchard with the boys many times before, but this might have been their best experience.  This is the first time that we have been there while the trees were so bountiful.  The boys couldn’t pick enough apples, and they were all good quality.  We pulled down four bags full, carrying them in the stroller while the boys walked alongside.  It wasn’t terribly busy since the pumpkins hadn’t arrived yet, so we had much of the orchard to ourselves.

While we were there, we stopped by the animal farm, saw Peter the Pumpkin Eater, and of course bought some pumpkin and apple donuts.  Those are delicious.  We’ll have to make it a tradition to visit the orchard every year on Labor Day to get the best choice of honey crisp apples.  There is something nice about eating an apple that you picked off the tree yourself.
