Plan B: Where We Have Fun Somewhere Between Wisconsin and Illinois

Late last spring, Chrissy and I made a list of all of the things that we would like to do over the summer.  The biggest thing on the list was a trip to St. Louis, which was pushed back to the end of the summer.  Although plans were made, we had to skip the trip due to inclement weather.  But there was a backup plan, which would come to be known as Plan B. The last item on our summer list was the Renaissance Fair.  It only occurs on the weekends until Labor Day, just over the Wisconsin border.  We knew that there was a chance of rain, but...

Rained Out Vacation

We had originally planned to go to St. Louis for our summer vacation.  The idea was to visit a buddy of mine near St. Louis and then introduce the boys to the Gateway Arch.  We also planned on stopping at Cahokia Mounds, where I proposed to Chrissy, on the way there.  There’s also the Magic House Children’s Museum, Meramec Caverns and the Botanical Garden’s butterfly conservatory to visit.  We had intended to stay in St. Louis for a few days to get it all in. The problem was that the weather would not be cooperating.  We...

An Open Letter To Peter Mayhew

An Open Letter To Peter Mayhew

Although our trip to the Chicago Comic Con was not terribly great, there was one really neat thing that happened to us.  We got to meet Peter Mayhew, the 7’3″ actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies, while he was there signing autographs.  I know that he does the convention circuit now, selling his books and talking to people, but Aiden and I had never seen him before.  So, it was pretty exciting to actually meet this guy in person. Aiden I waited a few minutes to talk to him, and I just told him that it was really...

Not Sure If I Liked The Chicago Comic Con

Not Sure If I Liked The Chicago Comic Con

I like to take Aiden to comic book conventions.  Primarily, we go to see superheroes (or people dressed up as super heroes) and take pictures with them.  I do enjoy comic books, but these trips are more for Aiden than for me.  I’ve followed comic books for twenty years without feeling the need to buy any or go to any comic conventions.  However, having Aiden does give me an excuse to take a more direct part in my geeky interests.  And everyone there loves my adorable boy. So the two of us went to the Chicago Comic Con again...

Garden Update: Tomato Factory

Garden Update: Tomato Factory

We have a tomato factory.  Chrissy started out with three tomato plants in the raised plant beds.  These have grown over the sides of the plant beds and are producing more tomatoes that we thought possible.  We’re starting to wonder what to do with all of these tomatoes.  Chrissy got a recipe for making salsa (with extra garlic), but otherwise we’re just giving them away. Chrissy also planted three cherry tomato plants in the raised plant beds.  We’re not giving many of these away though, because Aiden loves them.  He...

Is Google+ Better Than Facebook?

Is Google+ Better Than Facebook?

As far as I can tell at this point, Google+ is almost the exact same thing as Facebook.  Except Facebook has advertising, social games and weird content ownership rules.  I suppose that if you miss the gaming aspects of Facebook, it will be just a matter of time before Google and Zynga team up to bring social games (Mafia Wars, Frontierville, etc.) to Google+.  On the flipside, I also foresee Google hooking Adsense in for “tailored” advertisements on your profile page. The big problem with Facebook is that it’s trying to...

Garden Update: We Have Veggies!

The vegetable garden is doing better than we had ever hoped.  It must be the genetically superior super-soil that we used.  The tomatoes are small and green yet, the zucchini are growing well and there are even bell peppers popping out.  Chrissy is very proud! It won’t be long before we can actually harvest some vegetables!  Chrissy’s mom tells us that from the size of our tomato plants, we’ll be getting an excellent yield this summer.  I guess that I’m going to have to get used to eating fresh...

Who Can’t Act In Transformers 3?

Who Can’t Act In Transformers 3?

Overall, I really liked the acting in Transformers 3.  It’s about as believable as giant robots turning into trucks is going to be outside of Saturday morning cartoons.  Shia LaBeouf plays the one character that he knows how to do, John Turturro is over the top as ever, and Josh Duhamel rocks in everything he does.  Alan Tudyk stole the show, really.  But some people in this movie just can’t act to save their own lives.  Who?  Here’s a list: 1) Buzz Aldrin. Who’s that old guy that isn’t looking at the same...

Transformers Was Missing A Little Star Trek

Transformers Was Missing A Little Star Trek

The Transformers fandom was pretty excited to hear that Leonard Nimoy would lend his voice to Transformers 3 as Ultra Magnus Alpha Trion Sentinel Prime.  He was originally the voice of Galvatron in the 1986 animated feature movie, so this could be considered his “triumphant return” to the franchise.  What I didn’t expect were so many references to Star Trek in this new sequel. Here is a list of Star Trek references that I saw: Episode that Brains and Wheelie are watching on TV.  “This is the one where Spock goes...

Gavin’s First Movie Unsuccessful, Not Just Because It Was Cars 2

Gavin’s First Movie Unsuccessful, Not Just Because It Was Cars 2

We took Aiden and Gavin to see Cars 2 today.  Aiden has proven to be very good in movie theaters, but this was Gavin’s first trip.  He didn’t act very well at all.  Gavin didn’t want to sit in his seat, and he didn’t want to wear his 3D glasses.   When he did wear them, they kept falling off, so he would constantly ask us (loudly) to put them back on.  He had to leave the theater to go to the bathroom four times.  We almost left the movie early because of all the distractions from Gavin. The movie itself...
